Dear Colonial Secretariat,
NANKING,
19th June, 1947.
27
copy for Co. (MrA.N. Galsworthy)
Our despatch No. 117 of the 4th of June enclosing a copy of a note to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about the conviction in the Hong Kong court of two Chinese members of the Kwangtung Provincial Peace Preservation Corps found guilty of using arms with violent intent and without license.
The reply from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, of which we enclose a copy in translation, seems to us to be rather a feeble effort. As far as the irrelevance of the informal agreement is concerned we feel we can accept this contention, since it is in our interest to do so. If we do 30 however, then the second argument adduced by the Chinese is clearly a non sequitur.
We should however be lad to learn in due course what reply you would wish us to return to this note.

Colonial Secretariat,
HONGKONG.
Yours ever,
CHANCERY.
